Guiding, like many such clubs, developed it's own culture of terminology and sayings. Among these, were the mottoes. They existed from the start of Guiding, and continued in use until the 1990s. The mottoes for each section were:
Brownies: Lend a Hand.
Guides: Be Prepared.
They were dropped from use in the UK in the 1990s, as the view was taken that most members weren't familiar with the term 'motto'. Nevertheless, they still linger in many units.
