The Student Scout and Guide Organisation or SSAGO dates back to February 1967 as an organisation, bringing together 52 clubs. But the first Guiding or Scouting clubs for students started in 1915, and there were inter-varsity camps through much of the 1920s. Then from 1947 onwards annual rallies were held. The Scout And Guide Graduate Association was founded in 1957 to cater for former students.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, for various reasons, membership dwindled and events had poor attendance, but this somewhat recovered in the 1990s, and numbers have steadied since.
