1914 was the year Rosebuds began, and their uniform was a navy jumper, navy skirt, and some units had a light blue tie although this was not textbook.  They wore a rosebud badge on their hat.  They were split into Sixes, and their Sixes were names after trees.

In 1915 Rainbows became Brownies, and the uniform gradually transitioned.  Initially, in 1917, it was suggested that the uniform could be any of four options, two in navy and two in brown.  One of the four options is pictured on the left.  Even by the 1918 handbook, although the options had been simplified to the plain-coloured frock with button fastening at the neck, worn with a belt and a brown tie - the uniform colour, and the hat style, had not yet been agreed upon:

"A Brown or blue overall and belt.

Brown stockings.

Brown hair-ribbon and tie.

Brown knitted cap, or rush or felt hat."

By the early 1920s they reached agreement at last on what the Brownie Uniform was to be.  It stabilised to be:

Knickers - Brown

Cap - Plain knitted cap

or

Hat - Rush, with brown band

The Brownie uniform remained much the same until 1968, when a new Brownie dress was introduced, in a more reddish shade of brown, with the pockets moved to be patch pockets on the skirt.  By this time white socks or brown tights were most commonly worn with it (though fawn socks were also permitted).  The uniform had a yellow crossover tie which did not need folding - initially it fastened with a button, later with velcro.  The belt was available in leather, or the more common plastic option.  Initially the uniform had a brown beret, but this was soon replaced by a brown knitted hat with a pom pom.

In 1990 the uniforms for all sections of Guiding were altered bar Rainbows (as their uniform had been introduced only three years before).

For Brownies it was out with the draughty cotton frocks, and in with a range of mix-and-match uniform items - a sweatshirt or hooded sweatshirt or knitted jumper, a polo shirt, cullotes or joggers, with a baseball cap, and a sash for badges.  Each girl chose for herself which items she wanted to wear from the range.
